How we use and view office space now vs before COVID deserves reflection. Where you rank in the organisational hierarchy determines where you get to sit in the office building. The top floor reserved for the c-suite. Where you rank in the organisational hierarchy determines where you get to sit at the boardroom or any other table. The head of the table reserved for the CEO. And then COVID came and space was redefined. In an online meeting, no one knows what floor you are on or what the significance is of the chair you are sitting in. In an online meeting all of us occupy the same amount of physical space. At the office, we pay an inordinate amount of attention to where you rank. In an online meeting, all that matters is that you are linked. We can achieve more if we see our employees as linked instead of ranked. It seems to me that it is not that important how much space you are allocated. What matters more, is what you do with that space.
