Happy 2021!

Written by on January 3, 2021

I have lived at the foot of majestic Table Mountain much of my life. It took me half my life to take the time to climb it though. I figured the mountain will always be there. I had time. My late dad thought the same. He missed his opportunity.

Many of us are hoping to salvage some good out of 2020 with valuable life lessons we can build on. Many of us just want to forget the year ever happened. We have had to deal with so much loss. We still do.

But COVID life lessons and wishing 2020 over with should not stop us from taking a hard look at the lives we lived before 2020, before COVID. Would I have lived life differently if I knew COVID was coming? Much of what ails us happened before COVID.

Today I am not reflecting on 2020, but on my life before 2020. Did I choose predictable or uncertain paths? Did I grow? Was I grateful for my blessings? Did I climb my Table Mountains?

You can never fully prepare for the COVIDs of this world. Just like you can never fully prepare for when your health or finances go south or for when your life ends. No one makes it out of life alive. No one!

I close 2020 and open 2021 with a Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

Happy New Year!
