Fear is my gravity! I fear snakes, spiders, failure, even fear itself. But what I fear most of all, is not living my best life. These past few months, my husband’s daily brush with death as he heads off to hospital, has been a constant reminder of how precious and equally fragile life is.
While we are experiencing the Great Pause of 2020, it is becoming clear that the future is not what it used to be. We have the unique opportunity of creating futures that do not perpetuate or duplicate the past but are extra-ordinarily abundant and alive with new possibilities. But we will have to think differently.
I am reminded of Houdini, best known for his ability to escape from anything that attempted to restrict him. No box or straitjacket could contain him. Defying gravity was his stock in trade. His life was about getting out of the box, of being out of the box. He was the ultimate escape artist.
So here are a few gravity defying reaffirmed post lockdown promises to myself:
- I will go hiking in South Africa’s beautiful forests despite snakes and spiders. I love hiking.
- I will defy life’s gravities
- I will live life with gratitude, meaning and purpose
- I will lift as I rise
- I will make fun a routine
- I will NOT wait for post-lockdown
Now is the time to channel your inner Houdini and escape some of the straitjackets that are keeping you shackled to ordinary and bonded to safety. It was Nelson Mandela who said that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.
So defy your own gravity…. have courage and rise to the occasion that is your life.
